Leaf blowers are often used for clearing large areas due to their power and portability.
While they are convenient, they can create a large amount of noise.

When a leaf blower is powered by a gas powered engine it creates even more noise, air pollution, and releases other contaminants such as oil and fuel further contaminating the ground.
For this reason, many cities are placing restrictions on the use of gas powered leaf blowers either directly or indirectly through noise regulations.
In San Diego, Municipal code §59.5.0502(g) addresses leaf blowers.
This Municipal code defines a leaf blower as a portable hand held or backpack engine powered device with a nozzle that creates a directed air stream, which is capable of and intended for moving leaves and light materials.
Leaf blowers are not permitted to be used in residential zones between 7:00 PM and 8:00 AM on weekdays and 5:00 PM and 9:00 AM on weekends and legal holidays.
When their use is permitted, the sound level may not exceed 65 decibels at 50 feet or greater from the source. In order to reach below this sound level all leaf blowers shall be equipped with an approved sound limiter device like a functional muffler.
